The little old lady that lived in this
house on Culloden moor was nicknamed "Bell the Battlefield" (understandably).
My Dad says that he knew her and remembered that she made a reasonable living
from the tourists even in the pre National Trust for Scotland days, by selling
cauldrons. Apparently she was a bit of a character, and entertained each of her
visitors with the same story: that the pot they bought was the very one that
the highlanders had used to cook their last meal before they went into
battle. |

Leanach Cottage Culloden Moor. "Leanach" means- "marsh" which brings us to the
Gàidhlig House Names Archive.
I have listed here, the archive for the Scottish Highlands area
in alphabetical order( the Gaelic alphabet) and you are invited to click on a
letter below to view the listing for that letter . The compilation of the
archive is an on-going project and although other areas have been listed, it
must be remembered that Gaelic house names, like the language, are to be found
almost all over Scotland. If your house name is not listed, please
send it to me for inclusion, to-gether with your translation and the
geographical area. Just push the button below.
