Needles 1 pair of 4½ mm (uk7, us7). Stitch holders.

Tension 19sts and 24rows over 10cm square.

(If the square is too big use 4mm needles, if too small use 5mm).

Abbreviations

k = knit; p = purl; st(s) = stitches; st.st. = stocking stitch (one row knit one row purl). K2tog = knit 2 stitches together, sl1 = slip 1, p.s.s.o. = pass slipped stitch over.

The smallest size instructions are given first followed by the bigger sizes in brackets.

Back

Using 4 ½ mm needles cast on 62 (66,70,78) sts.

1st row (right side) – k2,*p2,k2, repeat from * to end.

2nd row – p2,*k2,p2,repeat from * to end.

These two rows make the rib (welt).

Repeat these last 2 rows for 2 ½ inches, finishing on a wrong side row and increasing 1(2,3,0) sts evenly across the last row by picking up a loop between sts. 63 (68,73,78) sts. **

Starting with a K row, continue in st.st. as follows:

Work straight until Back measures 11 (12¼, 13¼, 13¾) inches, finishing on a wrong side row.

Armholes

Cast off 5 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows 53 (58, 63, 68) sts.

Continue without further shaping until the armhole measures 5 (5½, 6, 6½) inches, finishing on a wrong side row.

Shoulders

Cast off 5 (6,6,7) sts at the beginning of the next 4 rows, then 6(6,7,7) sts at the beginning of the following 2 rows.

Leave the remaining 21(22,25,26) sts on a stitch holder.

Front Work as for Back to **. Commencing with a k row, continue in st.st. throughout as follows: Work 2 rows. Place pouch (right side) – k18(19,20,22) slip the next 27(30,33,34) sts onto a stitch holder for the pouch front, then turn and cast on 27(30,33,34) sts for the pouch back, turn and k remaining 18(19,20,22) sts. Work 25(27,29,31) rows on these stitches, finishing on a wrong side row.

Break the yarn and leave stitches on a spare needle. Return to the stitches left on a stitch holder for the pouch front, rejoin main colour and with right side facing work motif from chart with contrast yarn over next 26(28,30,32) rows, ending on a wrong side row. Break yarn.

Join sections of pouch

Next row (right side) k first 13(19,20,22) sts of pouch back, holding wrong side of pouch against the right side, k together first st of pouch front with first st of pouch back. K together remaining 26(29,32,33) sts of pouch front with corresponding sts of pouch back, k remaining 18(19,20,22) sts of pouch back section.

Work straight until front matches back to start of armhole shaping, finishing on a wrong side row.

Armholes

Cast off 5 sts at beginning of next 2 rows. 53(58,63,68) sts.

Work 4 (4,4,6) rows, finishing on a wrong side row.

Neck

Next row (right side) k26(29,31,34) and turn.

Work on these stitches only for first side leaving remaining stitches on a stitch holder.

*** Work 1 row.

Decrease 1 st at neck edge on next and every following alternate row until 16 (18,19,21) sts remain.

Continue without shaping until front matches back to start of shoulder shaping, finishing at the armhole edge.

Shoulder

Cast off 5(6,6,7) sts at beginning of next and following alternate row.

Work 1 row.

Cast off remaining 6 (6,7,7)sts.

Return to stitches left on holder, rejoin yarn and with right side facing proceed as follows.

Next row (right side) [k2 tog] 1(0,1,0) time, k to end.

Complete to match first side from ***.

Sleeves (both alike)(work motif on one or both sleeves as liked)

Using 4½ mm needles cast on 30(30,34,34) sts. Work 2½ inches in rib as given for back, finishing on a wrong side row and increasing 1(3,1,3) sts evenly across last row 31(33,35,37) sts.

Commencing with a k row, continue in st.st throughout. At the same time increase 1 st at each end of next and every following 4th row to 39 (37,39,49) sts. Then on every following 6th row until there are 49(53,57,65) sts.

Continue without further shaping until sleeve measures 12(13,15, 17) inches, finishing on a wrong side row.

Shape top

Place markers at each end of last row to mark top of sleeve seam.

Work 6 further rows.

Cast of all stitches loosely.

Press pieces with wrong side facing.

Making up

Join right shoulder seam.

Neck

With right side facing and 4½ mm needles pick up and k 25(25,29,29) sts down left side of neck, place marker on needle. Pick up and k 25(25,29,29) sts up right side of neck, then k across 21(22,25,26) sts from back neck stitch holder decreasing 1(2,1,2) sts evenly. 70(70,82,82) sts.

1st row (wrong side) – p2,* k2,p2, repeat from * to end.

This row sets rib.

Keeping the rib correct, proceed as follows:

2nd row – rib to within 2 sts of marker k2tog, slip marker onto right needle, slip 1 st k1 p.s.s.o. rib to end.

3rd row – Rib to within 1 st. of marker, p1 slip marker onto right needle, p1, rib to end.

Repeat last 2 rows 3 times more 62(62,74,74) sts.

Cast off in loose rib, still decreasing either side of marker as before.

Join left shoulder seam and Neck border seam. Matching centre of cast-off edge of sleeve to shoulder seam and sleeve markers to top of side seam, sew sleeves to back and front. Join side and sleeve seams.

Pouch edging

Pick-up and k 24 along right pouch edge. Proceed in k2, p2 rib for 6 rows, cast off loosely. Repeat for left pouch edge.

Sew ends of pouch rib to front of jumper.
